I therefore had to create the groups manually using phpmyadmin. All seemed to be ok as the groups are functioning correctly within the board and allowing / restricting access where needed. However i am willing to accept that this may A) be a bad idea and B) Have been done completely wrong

I ran the script that you linked to before and that created a single user group for each member (something I deleted from sql tables originally, thinking that these had been created during the conversion process and were surpluss to requirements. I was obviously wrong.

Anyway i looked at the groups table structure but could find no mention of Next Autoindex. At the moment they basically look like this;

the structure is after i ran the fix.php which you previously mentioned.

One thing i did notice that i missed before is that the error references the file "profilcp_register.php" so i am thinking that the problem could well lie with the profilecp mod that i implemented onto the board. I also (whilst mooching around sql) peeked in at the "phpbb_user_group" tables and noticed this little anomally. all the group ids / user id's are listed in numeric order until it gets to a point where they do this;

(where the first number column is the group_id and the second is the user_id)

and this continues to the end of the table. I'm not sure if this is meant to be so or if this is contributing to the problem.
