Arsenal's heroics in Belgium were the prelude for a number of dramatic turnarounds on the UEFA Europa League's opening night. The pick of the bunch saw Liedson complete a hat-trick in the 88th-minute as Sporting Clube de Portugal came from behind to win 3-2 at SC Heerenveen, while FC Salzburg won 2-1 at S.S. Lazio thanks to a Marc Janko strike three minutes into added time.

The noise generated by Beşiktaş JK fans has been recorded at 132 decibels, the equivalent to a plane at take off, and Manchester United FC goalkeeper Ben Foster was certainly blown away by the experience. "It was deafening. There was a point in the second half when I couldn't hear myself think, it was that loud," he said after United's 1-0 win. Paul Scholes's 76th-minute goal, though, quickly silenced the crowd. "We knew what to expect," the United veteran said. "We've been to Turkey a few times now."
