“Join to” is not much used in everyday English. It mainly is used to describe attaching pieces of an object. A furniture builder is traditionally called a ‘joiner’, as he joins pieces of wood together. “Join to” would probably suggest joining a smaller piece to a larger one. When putting two equal parts together we probably not use the preposition ‘to’, only the conjunction ‘and’. The minister joins the husband and wife together in marriage.
